In like a lion...out like a lion in sheep's clothing
So march has been an interesting month. But last night / today topped it. It's snowing, and sticking. Last night it snowed about an inch - much to the pleasure of our dogs that thought god was sending them ice chips.
Have I mentioned that our dogs LOVE ice? The come running when they hear my mom push the dispenser in the door for ice. They will even fight over the ice cubes. Crazy dogs!!
Back to the weather today it has been snowing off and all all morning. Which compared to last weekend when it was so warm people were wearing shorts (okay - I'll let you in on a little secret - people in Seattle will wear shorts when it hits 50, but still) is quite a difference.
I finally finished Stellanne's Easter picture. I was much displeased with the lack of color supplied by the Easter Bunny that she visited this year. And I would have taken her to another bunny, but alas, we were busy with my mom's house. So I've done even better, I photo shopped her into a much prettier background.

Before:
I think it looks a lot better. I ended up getting photoshop because my friend Amber always does these amazing photo collages for the holidays. I think the first one I saw was for her son's 1st birthday. And it was a picture a month for each of the 12 months and then one final "I'm One!" picture. The cool part was to see how much her son had changed. Then for the holiday's she's been sending out these cool collages, way better than any photo card you can print at Costco or Wal-Mart. So with the excuse that I will be saving money on printing for these events (and the fact that Lisa LOVES that 1 year card) Lisa let me buy photoshop. And one of the first things that they show you how to do is how to remove a subject from their current background and put into a new background. Perfect, I thought, for changing the Easter picture that I wasn't too happy with. Below are the 2 other collages that I played around with last night.

Not as good as Ambers, but I've only been doing it for 5 hours. You can't really see it in this picture but the picture of Herbie with his bunny ears as a bow tie, his tongue is sticking out - its quite cute!
Photoshop has become quite user friendly...sort of. I remember that back in 12th grade (6 or so years ago, for those of you who know me) photoshop was complicated. I took a week long course - why I'm not sure, but I did - and I don't think I was able to take myself out of a picture and put myself on another background. But that was in the days before digital cameras.
Speaking of digital cameras, have you noticed how small children think its completely normal to see the picture right after you take it? Stellanne even likes to look at the pictures afterwards. I'm pretty sure she'll think I'm lying when I tell her that when I was a kid you waited until you developed and got your pictures back (a week long process) to determine if the pictures were good, and you usually had to take 2 pictures just incase one didn't turn out - not because you looked at the picture already and determined there was something you didn't like about it. My Dad used to tell us about how he didn't have electricity when he was a kid, and that either he or his brother had to wake up in the morning and start a fire to heat the house. And that he would take a bath at a community bath house once a week (if that) because they didn't have a bathroom in his house. He would also say how they didn't have phones, that if you wanted to talk to someone that you had to actual leave your home and go over to theirs to tell them something. The words "OH DAD" were constantly said by me. Now as an adult I know he wasn't joking; but at the time the concepts he was telling me were so forgien I couldn't grasp them. The same will be true of Stellanne. She will think I'm crazy when I tell her that we didn't get our first family computer until I was 13 (or 14). And that to do a school report we would have to go to the library and read either books or encyclopedias. Not just google the subject. I'm sure she will also find it odd that I didn't get my first cell phone until I was 21. And that before then I had a pager, no doubt that she won't understand why we had communication devices that only worked one way. She will have no understanding that my Dad always sent us out of the house with a quarter (to call him) because #1 - everyone has a cellphone and #2 - only a quarter? Thanks to TiVo she won't understand watching TV in real time, or why there are even commercials. And if I had to guess she won't ever understand how we lived without email.

Inproportionate amount of laundry
So before we were three, we had at most 4 to 5 loads of laundry; and this amount included doing all of the bed sheets and rugs in our house. Today, today was 14 loads of laundry. 3 loads of whites, 3 loads of lights, 2 loads of darks, 2 loads of the dogs beds, 2 loads of towels, 1 load of sheets, and 1 load bathroom rugs. What the hell?!?!? I know that when you get a baby, you add to your laundry load, but come on; 9 freaking loads? I told Stellanne she was responsible for folding! And to top it off, I love our washer and dryer, but the washer has a timer that isn't "quite" right. I probably wouldn't have noticed, except at the same time that I was doing laundry I was also baking hamentashen and the hamentashen take exactly 13 minutes to bake. So I would put in a load of laundry that the washer said would take approximately 41 minutes; and 3 pans of hamentashen later...the washer was still spinning. Keeping in mind that there is "down" time in between the cookies to make them; you have to flatten the little rolled up balls of cookie dough and add the jam and then proceed to make little hats. Not a quick 1 minute job.
It also drives me nuts how the washer spins the clothes and then does this "gentle" tossing action. Not sure who the hell came up with that feature, other than a sadist. You are waiting for the laundry to finish, because you have 14 loads of laundry to complete and you think that the washer is finished spinning your clothes, but oh no, it pauses, and spins to the right, then it pauses and spins to the left. Like my clothes know the difference.
We had a very busy weekend, which lent itself to a very busy monday so that I could get caught up at home. My mom has decided to move; she is too far away from her kids and she'd like to find a place more south. I like the idea, but mostly because I'm selfish and want her close enough to drive over for dinner and for the driving itself to take less time than the dinner. So my mom has a list of to do's including painting most of her house, packing up the nick nacks, cleaning, and decluttering.
We had a very slow start on Saturday, but not because we didn't start early. For one reason or another we spent most of the morning doing things to get ready for the actual to do's. Very annoying. It did feel good on Sunday afternoon to cross a whole bunch of items off the to do list. I even made my mom add things that we completed that weren't previously on the list, just to make us feel better. Unfortunately, we didn't get enough accomplished to get it done in one weekend. I think that 2 or 3 more weekends should get it ready; hopefully! Lisa thinks that painting in my mom's house got the painting bug up my ass; I told her it was already there - I was just too lazy to go to home depot and pick out colors. Luckily - we've mostly done that now, and just have to get a free weekend to paint our house. I've decided on a dark black cherry red for the downstairs bathroom and as an accent wall in the kitchen. For my office I am going to paint the bottom half this chocolate brown suede and finish it off with a chair rail. Then for our bathroom I am going to paint this color that they call cococa, but truely it is like a light greyish brown that will go with our decore of Deep chocolate brown and bright white. I will then carry that color as an accent color in our master. I promised Lisa she could paint the craft room pastel yellow and I will probably paint the spare bedroom tan. It could become our new workout - since painting my mom's house has made every muscle in my body ache!
Stellanne also reached another milestone today. She rolled over. Well, not that anyone actually saw her, but since my mom left her on her back and when my mom returned (from a quick moment of putting clothes away) Stellanne was on her tummy. She of course did not determine that it was important to repeat this action, as she really hates tummy time, so why would she go back to her tummy? It's hard that she is growing up. Sometimes it feels so fast, but when I look at pictures from just a few months ago - it seems like it was AGES ago. When I look at pictures of my friends kids I get excited for Stellanne to be that age, to communicate (other than in a high pitched pterodactyl) and pose, and yet at the same time - I want to keep her in this stage forever. She is the sweetest baby and has the best laugh. Lisa and I will do anything to keep her laughing. Our "favorite" game includes Lisa holding her while I "chase" after them. This makes Stellanne belly laugh and Lisa and I can keep it up for well over 30 minutes, just to hear Stellanne laugh. I'm still not sure why it makes her laugh either; since when I "catch" them; its not like she gets tickled (not for lack of trying - she just tends to be fickle in her tickle spots) I would almost venture to guess that it has to do with the funny faces that I'm sure that I make while "chasing" them - but who the hell knows. Lisa and I both feel very blessed to have such a wonderful little girl in our lives!
Oh, on one final note - please vote for Stellanne as Baby Idol. www.movin925.com. You have to sign up as a MVP; but you can vote for her all day long on Friday! And if you email me, I'll give you a free email so your regular email doesn't become full of spam.

Pterodactyling
What is this you say? A weird skin disease brought back from the mesozoic age? No, no I say, that isn't right, it's what baby Stellanne does all day and all night. (Yes, I know I rhymed - thoughtfully from her favorite book Moo, Baa, LA La LA!)
So Stellanne has a new type of communication - that she really dug her little fingers into and uses at all moments of quiet. Pterodactyling. You know, high pitched squeals of pure happiness. That are almost on the brink of something you might hear when your child has been harmed? Sometimes I'm almost positive that she is trying to see how loud and high pitched she can squeal. She doesn't do it to get our attention; because surely once you started paying attention to her she'd stop. But no, our little pterodactyl continues; sometimes until the pitch has gotten so high that it makes her cough.
Sadly it reminds me of my Dad; when he died we created a list of what we liked to call Dad-isms. Things that seemingly only my Dad did - leaving 2 tblspns of milk in the carton and putting back in the fridge like it was a full carton. Writting a Christmas letter that in itself was like a Christmas book (usually 8 -9 pages long). Unfortunately it seems that my memory has failed in recalling all of these isms; but nice how something so simplistic as my daughters squeals bring them back to me. I often find myself wondering about my Dad and his grandchildren. I'm saddend that he didn't get the opportunity to interact with them. I think about how he would have talked to Stellanne as she gleefully squealed in his arms. It very much saddends me that I don't ever get to see that. And thankful that I get to see my mom interact with her every day. It's wonderful that they are building a bond - that even if Stellanne doesn't whole remember it - will always be there.
On to happier thoughts and back to my orginal line of blogging - did you know that Pterodactyl starts with a P? It took me at least 10 minutes to find the correct spelling. I knew I had it wrong (Terodacktle) when I googled the word and only 6 entries came back. The english language never ceases to amaze me with its intricacies and pure randomness.
