Congratulations.....my niece is pregnant

She called me today, she's almost 22, and she's all of 5 weeks pregnant. Why is it that when you are trying to have a baby, EVERYONE around you gets pregnant?

I'm having a hard time with this. I love her, and I honestly think that you are never ready for a baby, so it doesn't matter that she isn't ready for a baby. But then again I'm angry that it was so "easy" for her to get pregnant.

Lisa and I are on our 6th month of trying. And I HATE it. Making a child should be all about the love that we have for each other, and all about the great family we can foster. And yet, it's not. In the end, creating a child in our family is VERY mechanical. Checking surges and calulating timings SUCKS. The people I converse with about this have no idea how much this sucks for us. We actually spend money each month to go through this. Then we get the privilage of spending money to time everything correctly. And then for 2 weeks we wait. And for 2 weeks we fail.

I gave up last time. We were on our 12th month, and I said, who the F cares? No way in hell we will conceive so why not. And this month I've kinda done the same....so now I'm perplexed. I want to think it's worked. But I think it hasn't. I lie awake at night thinking about it.

I love S. She is amazing. She makes me laugh, she makes me completely upset. And all I can do is be thankful I have her. The moment she gives me a kiss I can't imagine life w/o her. The times she chooses to stay in her bed rather than have me pick her up, I could kill her. I feel like Elmira....I want to kiss her, and hug her, and smooch her, and love her and hold her until she doesn't move.....

That's me and my childhood with Looney Toons.

And yet, I want another one. This one I will "do" differently. I will be the one he/she turns to...I will be the one that wakes up in the middle of the night (even though I probably wont) and feeds / comforts him/her.

Carrie....I want you to know I love you and I really am happy for you, but at the same time, I"m REALLY sad for me.

Less than 2 months

In less than 2 months Stellanne will be 2. Sadly...I'm not okay with this.

She is an amazing kid. Regularly she makes us laugh. Almost EVERY single night at the dinner table. I am happy with us right now. I know she says no more than I'd like, but she makes me laugh more than I knew I could laugh.

I am fearful I will forget how much she makes me laugh. Last night I tried on her halloween outfit from her Aunt.....and she kept yelling CHEESE!!! I know that some day I will wish for the day when she yelled cheese. And what about when she has a sibling...do you think she'll be as out going? I worry about it every day. She is pretty sure right now that if she gets a "BABIEEEEEE" she'll get her binks back (thank you Josh and Alethea for providing Kyla as an example of what a baby is...) and she points out babies in stores, on TV in books...so I worry that when she gets a baby she won't be as excited....

And then there is Remi...who still LOVES babies. She has since a small child. I hope Stellanne is like her when we announce that we are expecting (BTW...this is NOT the annoucment...as we aren't) I never realized how hard it is to go from a no child house hold to a child house hold to a two child house hold. Some how the difference between single vs duplicate was never so great until we were on the verge of it.

We took away her binks....

So Stellanne has had to learn to adjust this week....and so have I. Sunday we decided that we would take away the binks. My mom and Lisa and been pushing for about a month; and for S's sake, I kept resisting. I'm still not sure why. But my rational goes something like this. Stellanne has no other security "blankets"; she doesn't hold on to a blankey, or a stuffed animal, and she doesn't suck her thumb. The one thing that has always brought her comfort is her binkie. Something that Lisa and I enforced. We called it self soothing. It is. Plain and simple it lets Stellanne soothe herself without us.

But she had become addicted. IE: if she threw the binkie on the floor of the airplane, I had to lick it off so she could have it back. Trust me, its not a good place to be.

Again, Lisa and my mom have been pushing for this for a while. Even the pediatrician said it might be time to give it up. But I felt so guilty for giving her this "tool" to soothe herself and then ripping it away felt mean. So I've been resisting.

Then this weekend we went to the mall to let Stellanne play on the play toy in the a/c. And we met a little boy. His name was Tobias and he was not yet 20 months. Tobias could spell his name (TOBY) and tell you all the colors he could see. Frankley this kid was either a freak or made Stellanne look like a retard. She barely talks. And a lot of the time her talking is muttled by her bink. We ask her to take it out, but if she doesn't feel like taking it out, she doesn't. And at this play yard, she was the only kid with a bink. UGH. My sweet sweet baby is the exception. Also this weekend we had my sister over. Who told me about getting rid of binks with her kids. She has 2 girls that are about 18 months apart...I think. I'm probably wrong and she reads this and thinks I'm a terrible aunt. But without looking at their birthday years I can't do the calculations. Beyond me not doing the math correctly...she says it was about 24 to 48 hours of whining and then it was done. So as Toby is spelling his name for me (Stellanne will probably be about 10 before she can just say her name) I think; I could do 48 hours. 75% of the time would be at school or sleeping and I would just have to deal with crisis for 25% of 2 days. I can do it. So we do it.

Sunday night after shes gone to sleep I sneek into her room and take the 2 binks that are in her bed away. I cry as I throw them away. My tears are from deep within. I ache with pain thinking of her crying for her binks.

Monday morning she wakes and searches for the binks. I finally go into her room when she starts to wail...BINKIE!!!!! Normally at 5am she does a quick search for the binks; finds one and puts herself back to sleep. So at 5:15am I get up with her. I change her. And then we try to rock. She knows...She knows the binks are missing. I turn on the light to watch her poor little soul seek out the binks. She checks under the bed. She checks under the dresser. She searches through the blankets. I sit on the floor with her and cry with her. The binkies are gone. We head downstairs to do a search.....we look in all of the drawers in the kitchen, we search the counters, and table. Strangely...she starts to calm down. She is now hungry. So we eat breakfast.

My mom kindly takes over. They "work" with stickers until it is time to go to school. Luckily, she goes to school. 2 lucky things, really. #1, she's preoccupied. It's the reason she gets bored at home. The jump from one activity to the other. #2, it's not me having to deal with upset Stellanne while she's trying to go to bed.

Weirdly, she sleeps 2 hours (tops is normally 1.5 hours) I pick her up, she makes me do a search for her bink in her bin at school....no bink. We get to the car, we search for the bink...no bink. We go to Target. I buy her popcorn as a "treat" for being a big girl. We buy "lovey" to help her with the transition. Not that I think she thinks its a trade; but it is something to occupy her thoughts. As we're searching for a lovey, we find a glow worm. I buy it....this is amazing. This is the best thing ever. This will make her happy at bed time. A time when her teachers aren't there to help.

I make Lisa put her to bed. It's too much for me. She crys for 45 minutes.....35 minutes in Lisa's arms and about 10 alone.

I was scared for Tuesday. But Tuesday morning came and while we woke up early and did another search it wasn't as bad. She was adjusting well. Until my mom took her to school. She screamed the ENTIRE way there. It was so bad that when 4pm rolled around my mom daudled in going to pick her up. I offer to pick her up. I want to get a cold dessert (it is afterall the hottest time in Seattle EVER). When I get to school I ask cautiously...how was it. The teacher says...why, because of the heat? (and goes on to tell me that they keep them inside) no...because of her binkie. We've taken them away. Her teacher says...not a big deal. 95% of the time she was leaving them around the room. OH THANK HEAVENS. I haven't just scarred my child for life. she takes another 2 hour nap.....

So Tuesday night I put her to sleep. And I am so pleased with her snuggly-ness and change (no crying) I actually do a happy dance. I have not scarred her for life.

Wednesday morning (today) she woke up early. Due to a poppie diaper. So Lisa brings her to bed with us to snuggle. She is not interested. I offer to snuggle her in her room and she takes me up on the offer.

You have to know. I am not Stellanne's preferred parent. We'd like to think that kids don't have preferred parents; but they do. And I totally figured that I was screwed until Stellanne got a sibling. Lisa would be her favorite. They had that breast feeding bonding. But Stellanne wanted me. So I took her. I soaked in the love. She drifted off to sleep as we rocked in her room with her glow worm in toe. It made my day.

Tonight...same thing. We snuggled, glow worm in toe. I loved EVERY second of it. I'm not sure; but I attribute her connection to me to me crying on her floor with her. I was just as upset as she was that the binks were gone. She saw that.

She's a super smart kid. And she does talk a lot; but the bink did make it difficult. She was almost requiring full time use. I know it was the best thing for her; and should my friends be debating this issue. I just have these words of wisdom...it's only 48 hours. 2 days. You can do it. You may think it is going to hurt; but it will hurt you more than it will hurt them. And they won't care in 4 days....

Google

Have you ever thought about how long Google has been around....?

I don't think I have. I don't remember a time w/o Google and yet I can't remember when I started to use Google. Listened to a movie tonight about kids at MIT that counted cards in Vegas.....mentioned Google; I seriously don't remember when Google became my search engine of choice.......

I kinda remember in H.S using Alta Vista.....but that's about it. Wow. What a great marketing team.

Celebrating 120 years

So this last weekend we went to Albuquerque, NM to celebrate Lisa's 30th Birthday, her brother Larry's 40th Birthday and her sister Liz's 50th Birthday. I can't even think of anyone else I've ever heard of being able to celebrate 120 years together, let alone being siblings.

It was an amazing trip. Stellanne had the most fun. Lisa's brother has 4 children that doted on Stellanne the entire time. Stellanne is pretty sure she was born to be a little sister; but alas, she will be the oldest.

I'm pretty hard on Lisa's family. 99% of it comes from the fact that my family is SO accepting. Infact, they are more so accepting of Lisa that in a divorce, we always joke that they'll get Lisa. But the truth is that my family is just happy that I'm happy; and Lisa is the 1 person in the world that could make me happy. (I promise not to be sappy).

I told Lisa before she ever met my family that it felt like my mom and her sisters were waiting to find out who won the lottery....the gay lottery. Since my uncle was gay, they HAD to have a child that was gay. Not that they were making light of being gay, just that clearly, each person is born to love another person; for some people that person is the opposite sex, and for others its the same sex. I also get the impression that maybe my uncle had a hard time coming out, and my mom and aunts wanted to make sure that NONE of their children ever had that issue. As a "small" child I never understood how lucky I was to have a family like that. As an adult, I'm truely grateful. It's a value I hope to impart to Stellanne. Out of all the things I teach her, tolerance is my number one priority.

So this weekend was the first weekend that I really felt relaxed around Lisa's family. Lisa and I have been together for 10 years; and I've known her family for 9.75 years. I am not the Janette that you all know, when I am around them (usually) I am quiet, I keep my opinions to myself and rarely add anything to conversations. It's somewhat a difficult time being around them. But I manage. This weekend was the opposite; I felt a part of their family...almost as much as I'm a part of my family (knowing that they'd take Lisa in a divorce). It almost brings me to tears thinking about how nice they were. And not just nice, genuinely, heartfelt nice. They actually wanted me there, and at one point I was referred to as Aunt Janette.

I know, sounds corney, but thats a BIG deal. That's recognition of who I am to not only Lisa and Stellanne, but to another family.

It makes me want to do more with them; and I know it was a big weekend for Lisa. I'm not sure she felt the same way; obviously they have always recognized her as their sister; but maybe she saw that acceptance of Stellanne and I? But her brother is a big deal to her. So many times in her life he has made an impression; and it's almost more important that he love her for who she is than her parents. I'm getting choked up when I think about how much they made her year just by being the people that they are.

Happy birthday Lisa, I love you!

Stellanne's "First" Sentence

So I'm being VERY liberal with the term. But Stellanne has started to ask, What's that? I think it started two weeks ago at the grocery store. For reasons that I can't seem to remember right now, Stellanne and I ended up at the grocery store alone.

On a side note, it's super fun to spend time with her alone. It's almost as if she knows that you are the only one to fix her "problems" so she complains less. If she throws a binkie while you are driving down the road, and you tell her "sorry, can't reach it" she understands. Whereas, if there are 2 other adults in the car, even if she threw it in the only place that all of you can't reach, she thinks you're lying. And it also seems like I get to know her more. When I'm with Lisa and her, Lisa and I talk. When Stellanne and I are alone, she's the one I talk to. Anyways, I'm just saying I enjoy it.

So as we start off in the produce section, Stellanne clearly questions "What's that" So I tell her, apples. So she starts to point to everything and ask. Her little brain is soaking it all in. She is starting to notice differences and comment on them. While I realize that soon it might be tedious to answer every "What's that" with an excited answer; I'm VERY excited that she's talking this much. She often get's by with whinning or pointing because she has 3 adults to cater to her. So it's an exciting moment when she actually starts to use her words.

There are some differences she can't notice though, and they are slightly funny. So this weekend we held a garage sale. It was VERY productive. We got rid of a lot of junk that was cluttering our garage. Mostly duplicates from the combined households (ours and my mom's). I wouldn't say that we made a ton of money, but I wasn't unhappy with our days work. The most productive part of it was cleaning out the garage and getting it to a point where we have a work space and a car(s) parking space. Which I credit Lisa with doing most of. So back to my story. My oldest sister came to contribute/partake in our garage sale. She lives in the boon-docks. And not only would no one come to a garage sale for her, but they really don't want people poking around.

So Friday night, WAY past my bedtime, she showed up with a truck full of stuff to sell, most of which I think did sell. One thing, I'm SURE didn't sell.....the fake grapes. Which Stellanne had NO idea were fake. She was SO pissed when I came RUNNING to stop her from trying to pick a fake grape and eat it. At least 5 garage sellers where at our sale when I ran from one end to another yelling "NOOOOOOOOOOO, NOT REAL, STELLANNE STOPPPPPPPP!!!!!!"

You see, Stellanne's favorite fruit is grapes. Fresh, Frozen or dehydrated, she LOVES them all. And her little hands were wrapped all around the fake grapes. The moment is funny now, then I was scared!

So anyways, Stellanne, is using her vocabulary; of which I'm often concerned isn't large enough. But Lisa and I have counted and she definately has a vocab of at least 20 words; so I suppose for 19 months she's not doing so bad. Particularly because she's started to do "sentences" :)

Matt & Laura's wedding

So yesterday we got to attend a wedding of a family friend; one that I've known since he was 3. A few things about the wedding. First I realized I've NEVER been to a wedding where I was more friends with the groom than with the bride. Weird. Seems more emotional knowing the girl than knowing the boy. Not sure why.

Stellanne had an AMAZING time. She got great food, cake and dancing. Oh how she loves to dance. Stellanne has loved music since she was VERY little. I think we went to a hannukah recital when she was just about 2 weeks old and she listened quietly during the entire thing. To this day one of her favorite night time songs is Candles Candles.

Anyways, back to the wedding..I got the cutest video of Stellanne dancing with another little girl. Oh my gosh, Stellanne LOVED it. You can't hear her on the video, but she was giggling the entire time; and had this wonderful smile. She's pretty sure she was born to be a little sister; since she loves older children. She also started twirling at this wedding. So freaking cute.

I can't wait until she can take dance class. Just a few more short months (less than 5 :) )

So one other thing that freaked me out. How fast it all goes. In just 11 years we'll be dancing at Stellanne's bat mitzvah (assuming we become good jews and start going to synogague...still yet to be deterimined) and in just 12 or so more years after that we'll be dancing at her wedding. Really scary! I sometimes just have to enjoy the moments we have now and not think about the future. It's too much for me.

For right now, I'll just enjoy that her new favorite phrase is.."What's that?" although it comes out more like "Wuz at?"
